The Chef
Ross brings his world-class skills and genius to Pippin Took2. He has won multi awards and has had a stellar career with many years of industry experience.
Ross has been selected to represent Australia on two occasions, at the Bocuse D’or World Cuisine in Lyon, France and competed at the International Culinary Olympics, where he was awarded 2 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.
He has also competed successfully, locally, nationally and internationally, having won the fiercely competitive Global Chef Challenge to represent the Pacific Rim region. He then competed in Santiago, Chile, as one of the 7 world region finalists, where he was placed 3rd in the world.
Winning many accolades throughout his career, Ross has been recognized locally by winning the Chef of Chefs competition and nationally, by winning 2 prestigious Australian Gold Plate Awards.
Ross’ driving force is his zeal for consistently producing the best contemporary food, combined with a true sense of professionalism and hospitality. His long-held enthusiasm, which took seed at the age of 15, commenced from his chef’s apprenticeship at the Crest International Hotel in Brisbane, where he learnt his skill in classical French cooking which remains a foundation of his cooking technique today. Ross is a member of the Acadamie Culinaire de France.
Having owned and operated award winning restaurants, the combination of Ross Howell’s creative ability, and Helen Johnson’s wealth of industry experience and expertise, makes them a formidable team, orientated and focussed to ensure consistency in all areas.

Pippin Took² is the reincarnation of the original restaurant in the Brisbane suburb of Bardon. They took a detour in the 90s/noughties with Chow Bistro in Milton too - the venue my wife & I chose for our post wedding dinner with family. These days Helen & Ross are enjoying running a smaller, more intimate venue. I have dined at both the original & new Pippin Tooks, with my wife, friends & family going back to 1988. Not once have we had a bad experience, and long term friends have always been full of praise for their experience, and have been repeat customers too. Helen is the perfect host - unruffled, calm, attentive & thoroughly professional. Ross is a master in his kitchen, presenting high quality food that has never failed to leave me smiling & sated. I have been dining with these fabulous folk for over 35 years. That is a testament to their passion, commitment to quality, and the way in which you become part of their family, because I cannot say that about any other restaurant I have been to. Repeat business? Yes. Nearly 40 years, across 3 or more venues? Nope. And one of only 2 BYO restaurants I have ever taken 20+ year old wines to.Posted on Google![]()

Absolutely amazing food and service. The steak and duck confit were both cooked to perfection. Crispy duck skin with the meat that can dissolve in your mouth. Did not expect to find a restaurant that awesome in a tourist spot. And it must be hard keeping the business going as when we visited there was only us in the whole restaurant. The entre cheese soufflé and the desserts are all amazingly delicious too. Cannot recommend the restaurant more.Posted on Google![]()
